The Master of Education in Teacher Leadership M.Ed is designed for teachers who want to develop and hone their leadership skills but wish to remain in the classroom. Our program is offered in a part-time, accelerated online format, which offers you flexibility alongside the opportunity to work with curriculum, become mentor/master teachers and establish a program that improves schooling for all.

Teachers in the state of New Jersey may apply to the Master of Education in Teacher Leadership program through the New Jersey Teacher Outreach Program (NJTOP®).

Curriculum for Master of Education in Teacher Leadership M.Ed

The M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership is a part-time program offered in an accelerated online format. This degree requires the completion of a minimum of 30 graduate semester hours in 6 consecutive semesters. The following three components make up the M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership program:

Core Courses: 19 Semester Hours

  • 18 semester hours in Teaching & Learning
  • 1 semester hour in Self-Study Research in Teacher Leadership (ELEM 02602)

Content Area Courses: 11-21 Semester Hours

Choose from one of the following:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders: 15 Semester Hours
  • Educational Technology: 15 Semester Hours
  • English as a Second Language: 16-21 Semester Hours
  • Global History: 15 Semester Hours
  • History: 15 Semester Hours
  • Holocaust and Genocide Education (Sociology & Anthropology, Glassoro Campus): 12 Semester Hours
  • Learning Disabilities (Interdisciplinary & Inclusive Education, Online & Glassboro Campus): 15 Semester Hours
  • Reading: 15 Semester Hours
  • Reading/Writing: 15 Semester Hours
  • School Public Relations: 9 Semester Hours
  • Special Education: 18 Semester Hours

Program Exit: 1 Semester Hour

Self-Study Research in Teacher Leadership (ELEM 02602)

The six core courses for this program are offered completely online. The approved Content Area Certificates of Graduate Study (COGS) are offered in varying formats depending on the COGS (e.g., online, online and face-to-face, face-to-face Glassboro Campus, face-to-face Camden Campus). If students hold National Board certifications, two courses in the Core/Teaching and Learning COGS will be waived.

*Students that select the COGS in School Public Relations will be required to complete an additional two or three credit course to meet the 30 total required credits for the program. Please contact the program coordinator for additional information.

The following courses make up the Master of Education in Teacher Leadership program. Each course is scheduled in eight-week modules with each week of work starting every Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. and ending every Monday at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).

Admission Requirements for Master of Education in Teacher Leadership M.Ed

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the program. There may be additional actions or materials required for admission to the program. Upon receipt of the materials below, a representative from the Rowan Global Admissions Processing Office will contact you with confirmation or will indicate any missing items.

  • Completed Application Form
  • Completed M.Ed. Teaching Verification Form
  • $65 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee
  • Bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended (regardless of number of credits earned)
  • Current professional resume
  • Typewritten statement of professional objectives (which must include applicant’s definition of a “Teacher Leader”)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • NJ Standard or CEAS Teaching Certification (required only for Special Ed. Content COGS)
  • Signed statement of regular, on-going access to a classroom
  • Statement confirming you are currently teaching and have been an active teacher for at least one academic year.
  • The applicant must provide proof of appropriate certification, as well as a letter of employment confirming the specific dates (not just years) during which the applicant has taught or served the educational community under the appropriate certificate.
